ADVICE! from Jillian Mercado
For this week’s Advice!, we turned to Jillian Mercado, a New York fashion blogger and column editor of PMc Magazine. Not only is Jillian stylish and up on the current trends, but she has also helped to inspire others. While she has dealt with Spastic Muscular Dystrophy her whole life, which has placed her in a wheelchair, she has learned to work twice as hard at everything in order to achieve her dreams.
So, The CIX asked: What is your advice to others on how they can fight through the negativity of life and instead remain confident and motivated (in life, career and otherwise)?

Although it may seem like I have my life packed and planned out emotionally, it took a lot of time and watching people’s reactions to my way of life to get to where I am today. I went through everything you can possibly imagine, except physical abuse (thankfully), but people can be very mean without saying a word. I have learned to not have it affect me by honestly not caring. You have only one life to live, so why not make the best of it. The key is to love yourself for who you are, not for everyone else, because they don’t have your life, you do. I won’t lie and tell you it’ll be easy, but that’s half the struggle, the rest flows in like water. I didn’t want to be just another girl in a wheelchair who loves fashion and lives in NYC. I want to be Jillian Mercado, a girl who broke the stereotype and works in the fashion industry in the best city in the US of A, NYC. You have to fight for yourself, for what’s right, and believe me life will turn.
